Tom waved up. Dad's knees went up! Down. Dad bent low! Sideways. “Whoooosh!” Tom giggled and gave Dad the ribbon.

Dad waved once. Tom reached. “Eh! Eh!” “That way?” Dad leaned sideways. Tom shook his head. “I want the ribbon!”

Tom leaned into Dad, laughing. Dad kissed his hair. Tom held out the ribbon. “Now you!” Dad is always here for you. Taking turns lets us both play.

Sharing play by taking turns and making room for each other's feelings while waiting. Taking turns helps Tom and Dad both enjoy playing while staying close through the waiting. Dad asks about three waves each; Tom waves, then gives Dad the ribbon. Dad waves once, and Tom reaches and says he wants the ribbon. Dad names Tom's wish and says two more waves, then Tom's turn. Tom looks unhappy; Dad stays close and offers his other hand. Tom takes it. Dad finishes two waves and gives Tom the ribbon; Tom takes three waves. Tom offers Dad a turn, and Dad makes three big waves. Dad returns the ribbon; they whoosh together, cuddle, and Tom offers another turn. Agree on a small number of waves for each turn. Pause and name your child's wish when waiting feels hard. Say how many waves are left before your child's turn. Stay close and offer your hand while your child waits. Finish your turn, then hand over the shared toy as promised. Taking turns making waves with a ribbon. Sharing a toy car on a ramp. Taking turns tapping a toy drum. Sharing a crayon while drawing together. You want the ribbon now. Two more waves, then your turn. Like Dad, you can stay close through an unhappy moment and keep the shared play warm.
